Brad sat with his door closed, the case file on Leah Myers’s death spread across his desk. He’d been the recipient of a few surprised looks this morning, coming into the office dressed in civilian clothes on his day off. Janet, the dispatcher, was particularly curious. She was also a notorious gossip, so Brad said he was using the time to organize his office. If he’d told her his real reason for being here, she’d broadcast it to the entire town.

The file was thin, even with the inclusion of the coroner’s report. Brad expected that—given Denny Austin didn’t conduct much of an investigation. The coroner said she died of massive internal injuries resulting from a fall. No surprise there. What was disturbing was some of the investigative notes were missing. He’d spoken with a couple of the guests as well as the Hawthornes. None of them had seen Leah near the cliffs and were unable to provide any useful information. Still, everything related to the case should be included.

Had the items been left out intentionally or misfiled? It only added to the puzzle. After looking through the documents, Brad had almost reached the conclusion he wouldn’t find any answers when he located Denny Austin’s interview notes with a guest named Adele Rivers.

She stated she was a friend of Leah’s and said they often planned trips to meet up at the inn. According to her, Leah wasn’t distraught. “She wasn’t depressed and had no reason to kill herself.”

Apparently, Austin had shrugged off her statement. Brad wished he’d been the one to interview her. He’d bet money she would have said more if given the chance. According to the note, she was a regular guest at Harbor Pointe Inn. If he knew when she might visit, maybe she’d be willing to talk. He’d have to do it on his own time. There was no justification to reopen the investigation.

A page from a legal pad contained some handwritten notes. Denny had a habit of writing out his thoughts when he was working on a case. Most of it Brad already knew. At the bottom of the page, Austin had scribbled RIP. Rest in peace. Strange thing to write in an investigative file.

His cell phone rang. Dana’s number flashed on the screen.

“Hello?”

“I was hoping you’d like to grab a bite of lunch. I don’t have to work until 3:00, so we have plenty of time.”

Brad glanced at his watch, surprised it was almost noon. “I’d love to join you.”

“Want me to swing by your apartment?”

“No, I’ll meet you somewhere. I’m at the office.”

“On your day off?”

“Just looking through an old file. Seeing Daryl Warren last night reminded me of something that happened near the lighthouse a few years back.”

“You mean the Myers death?”

“Yes. I assisted with the investigation. If you want to call it that.”

“I take you aren’t convinced it was a suicide.”

“Let’s say I’m not sure.”

“Well, you might be interested in this. Ken told me the inn has a few interesting guests this weekend.
